50th Anniversary of the publication of 'The Lord of the Rings' by J R R Tolkien
26 February 2004
Royal Mail, the national postal service of the United Kingdom, commemorated the 50th anniversary of the publication of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers on February 26, 1954 with an issue of a block of 10 x 1st class postage stamps depicting drawings illustrating locations in the books. All the stamp illustrations were by the author except for the
map which was by his son Christopher.
Kim Benson was honoured to have her Tolkien artwork featured on these Handstamped Limited Edition souvenir 50th anniversary First Day Covers in the UK. Each envelope bears two of the commemorative stamps and is officially postmarked by Royal Mail: ‘Shirehampton,
Bristol - 50th Anniversary of Myth and Magic , 26th February 2004’.
